CURRENT MARIGOLD BREEDING PROGRAMS IN INDIA

Breeding programmes in marigold are ongoing in various institutions with the following objectives:

  • To develop superior quality, high yielding varieties/F1 hybrids of marigold with higher carotenoid content and suitable for cut and loose flower production.
  • To develop floriferous varieties of marigold and lupin suitable for garden display.
  • To Identify promising varieties/lines with antagonistic properties against root knot and reniform nematodes.

F1 HYBRIDS STATUS

Presently, most of the varieties being grown in marigold are open-pollinated, which are less vigorous, uneven in height with low yield and vulnerable to cross-pollination. This situation leads to the degeneration of open pollinated varieties. The F1 hybrids play a vital role in marigold with respect to earliness, profuse and uniform flowering, biotic and abiotic stress resistance, higher yield, etc. Very few F1 hybrid marigolds are available because of the tedious hand pollination and more chances of getting a mixture due to presence of several florets bearing an individual stigma in a single capitulum.

In India, some preliminary efforts were made at the National Botanical Research Institute, Lucknow during the 1970’s to produce interspecific F1 hybrids between T. erecta and T. patula, but so far, not a single hybrid from the public sector has been released in India for commercial cultivation.
